Shipton Spire is an awesome peak in the Trango Valley. Three miles across the Trango Glacier and just above the confluence of the North and South Hainablak glaciers was the elusive Shipton Spire. It rises out of the ice without hesitation; its walls look fierce and steep.

It wasn’t until the summer of 1996 that a solid North American/Australian team finally conquered Shipton Spire 5900m. In 1995, Ryuji Taniguchi, the solo Japanese climber, perished in a massive rockfall while attempting to climb the wall. His haul bag was still 13 pitches up.

In 1997, Jared Ogred and Mark Synnott made a new route, Ship of Fools on Shipton Spire. Since then, many climbers worldwide, including Cecilia, Nan Darkis, Lizzy Scully, Charles Boyd, Greg Child, and Greg Foweraker, tried their luck on this rock tower. A few, like Fabio Dandri, who made the Women and Chalk route, and Jared Ogred and Mark Synnott, who made the Ship of Fools course, succeeded.

The climbing is hard. A long unprotected traverse across mixed ground over the north face led to a steep section of crumbling rock with the consistency of kitty litter.

Shipton Spire is two hours from Trango Towers Group on Upper Trango Glacier. A 29-pitch, 4,400-foot big wall with pitch rated 6c, 7b, and 7b+ that certainly offers the best technical climb you ever have

01: Arrival Islamabad

Arrival at the airport and then transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay in Islamabad.

02: Islamabad to Skardu (By Air)

Early morning flight to Skardu (flights are subject to weather); if unable to fly, we will depart for Skardu by road with an overnight stay at Chilas. Overnight stay in a hotel at Skardu.

03: Chilas to Skardu

In case the flight has operated, we will go for a sightseeing tour of Skardu and in case there is no flight, the day will be used for overland travel from Chilas to Skardu (total drive is 22 – 24 hrs from Islamabad to Skardu). Overnight stay in a hotel at Skardu.

04: Rest day at Skardu

The day is to finalize the expedition arrangements. Overnight stay in a hotel at Skardu.

05: Skardu to Askole

After breakfast, we will embark jeeps for a whole day ride on a winding jeep trail to Askole – The last inhabitance on our way to the Great Glaciers. (Tent)

06: Askole to Jhula

Today, we will leave the last inhabited village of Askole. For the remaining portion of our journey, we will rely on our local team to carry our food and equipment and sustain our expedition. Trek to the Dumurdo river cross at Jula (Jula means wire Rope-Bridge supported by a wooden basket); now, a day wooden bridge has been built to cross it (Tent)

07: Jhula to Paiju

We will resume trek along the Braldu River to a green oasis under the shadows of Paiju Peak 6611 M. (Tent)

08: Rest Day at Paiju

Rest & acclimatization day at Paiju. (Tent

Please Note: Gilgit Baltistan flights are subject to weather and backlog, in case of flight cancellation we will travel by road, and one night of Islamabad will be adjusted in overland travel.
